Piglet, the pink puppy
A few years ago, Melissa Shapiro, a veterinarian, was asked by the Colbert Veterinary Rescue Services if she would take in a blind and deaf pup named Piglet. The pup was so young, fragile, and didn’t even weigh two pounds. Melissa knew that it would be a massive commitment to take care of Piglet, but it was one that she took wholeheartedly.
Piglet’s first few days at Melissa’s home weren’t easy. Suddenly, Piglet has humans and six other dogs around him. Everything felt so new to him. But Melissa steadfastly cared for Piglet and taught him signals and routines that helped him navigate his new environment.
With constant support and guidance, Piglet settled in with his new family. He stepped out of his shell and became more confident in himself. Piglet also became so close with Melissa that they learned to communicate with each other even without verbal or visual cues.
Piglet has come a long way since the day he joined Melissa’s family. His improvements have been outstanding. This cute little pup showed people that he can overcome all obstacles because he always thinks on the bright side.
Piglet’s positive mindset soon rubbed off on people. An elementary school teacher even used “Piglet’s mindset” as an example to help students overcome their challenges. When Melissa learned of this, she thought it would be wonderful to turn it into an educational outreach program that teaches more kids about Piglet’s mindset.
But it doesn’t stop there. Melissa wrote a book around Piglet’s life story which would be available in August next year. Melissa is also working on a picture storybook about Piglet as well.
Piglet may be a tiny pup, but he has massively influenced many people with his confidence and positivity. Now, Piglet is living his best life by serving a greater purpose. Way to go, Piglet!
