Dogs that give birth to a large number of puppies are always at risk of dying of complications. Even when the litter of puppies are healthy when they’re born, it’s not likely they’ll survive if the mama dog dies. Thankfully, some people take on the job of taking care of these puppies.
A litter of French Bulldog puppies that were only a few hours old when the mom died due to complications of giving birth was given to Laura Labelle. The family who owned the dogs didn’t know how to take care of the puppies and decided to give them to Laura. Laura founded the Labelle Foundation and shouldered the responsibility of helping the litter of puppies survive without their mom.
Laura knew that taking care of the puppies require 24-hour care. She needed to feed the puppies every hour and also clean after them to make sure that they grow healthy. The family who surrendered the puppies to Laura wanted the best for the puppies, and they didn’t have the know-how or the resources to keep all the puppies alive. Although they tried to care for the puppies themselves, they had to make the hard decision to hand them over to Laura.
Everything was going smoothly. The puppies were steadily gaining weight and were generally healthy. However, what Laura didn’t know was that it was about to get worse for the puppies. After almost five weeks in Laura’s care, the puppies got sick.
Laura initially thought it was the flu, but it turned out to be distemper, which is a deadly virus that kills puppies most of the time. Everyone told Laura that the puppies would die, and they have zero chances of survival. Of course, Laura was devastated, but she refused to give in.
The hardest thing about distemper is that it has no cure. Laura had to wait. All she could do is give the litter of puppies plenty of supplements to fight off the virus in their system. Laura couldn’t sleep or eat and barely went outside her house. She devoted all her attention to the puppies.
Then, a miracle happened. After three weeks of fighting the virus, all the puppies made it. They all survived, and they turned from sickly dogs to a lively and feisty group. All the puppies were healthy and ready for a forever home.
After months of caring for the puppies, Laura was happy and sad at the same time that the puppies she worked hard to take care of and keep alive were finally leaving her. She knows it’s part of the work she does, but she’s been through so much with the puppies. However, Laura knew that each of the puppies would go to a loving home.
It’s amazing how love and care can change the outcome of what’s expected. The puppies Laura took care of had no chance of surviving. However, Laura stepped up and made it happen. Here’s a video of the French Bulldog puppies that Laura took care of from birth to being adopted into forever homes.
