Not all heroes have two feet or wear capes. They are sometimes furry and are four-legged, equipped with a superior sense of smell, and can readily attack the villains. That is exactly how one can describe Bass, a brave Belgian Malinois serving in the US Marines and who was recently hailed as one of the true American heroes.
The courageous canine thrives in a dangerous environment, working alongside his comrade-in-arms to protect the innocent from the wicked. With his piercing golden eyes and a brave heart, Bass has been able to aid the well-trained soldiers in subduing terrorists. His ability to detect explosives coupled with his strength and determination in taking down the bad guys ultimately saved numerous lives.
His proud handler, Marine Staff Sergeant Alex Schnell, knew how special Bass was the first time they met. Alex has been with Bass since his training, and they have been through a lot of difficult situations where the valiant canine repeatedly saved the day. The two served in Iraq, Somalia, and Afghanistan, where Bass earned his stellar reputation and was usually requested to work with other teams.
His most memorable mission was in Afghanistan, where he joined the team tasked to arrest or neutralize high-value targets. Despite the low visibility and gunfire that lasted an entire night, Bass kept his focus on the mission. He was the first to enter the enemy’s fort, and after neutralizing the guards, his teammates were able to complete their mission unharmed.
This was just one of the almost 400 missions assisted by Bass, where he either successfully neutralized the enemies or detected dangerous explosives. Miraculously, all of the said missions yielded no casualties on the US military. His complete dedication to his work has indeed saved untold numbers of lives and dreams.
With such an amazing record, Bass is truly deserving of receiving the utmost honor and recognition. He was conferred a Medal of Bravery in November last year by Angels Without Wings, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring military canines. The bravery and heroism of Bass are truly inspiring. Thanks, Bass!
