A 7-year-old poodle named Lionheart has lived without his owner’s care for a long time. In April 2019, he was brought to the Richmond SPCA in Virginia, and the staff was surprised to see a dog in such a poor state. The shelter’s CEO even said that he had never seen such a severely neglected for the past 22 years.
Lionheart was indeed robbed of his happiness because of his bad experience. His owner kept him under a bed and slid only some food for him. The whole two years were tough for Lionheart, and if he wasn’t surrendered to the shelter, his condition could have turned for the worse.
The neglected pup’s appearance could make the hearts of many animal lovers break. It just showed how much he suffered while he’s in the hands of his owner. He could barely see and move because of his matted fur that turned into dirty and thick dreadlocks.
Grooming Lionheart was not at all easy and proved to be a challenge for the vet. It took hours to get rid of his matted fur as well as his urine and feces. After all the filth was removed and the dog’s body cleaned, a different animal emerged.
But Lionheart needed not only physical transformation but also emotional and mental rehabilitation. So, for two months, the shelter staff was focused on giving him constant care, affection, and attention until he regained his trust in humans. It was a mission accomplished when the once sad-looking dog turned to a happy, adorable, and energetic pup.
This pup was named Lionheart because of his strong will to survive years of neglect. His experience proved that dogs could rise above the challenge, no matter how long it takes. The shelter hoped that his story would serve as a big lesson to pet owners who don’t take their responsibility seriously.
