It is common for our dogs to feel anxious sometimes, more so for rescue dogs. However, if these feelings aren’t addressed early enough, they may escalate into becoming a disorder – and sometimes cause our dogs to resort to destructive behaviors that can get them hurt. When one woman’s rescue dog started showing signs of escalating separation anxiety, she was lucky to be able to come up with a unique solution to ease her doggies unease whenever she left the house.
Everything that could help
From the moment Colleen adopted her rescue dog, Sara, they became best buddies instantly. The pooch had a happy and sweet personality and behaved like a lady. However, it didn’t take long for Colleen to find out that Sara’s traumatic past had caused her to suffer from separation anxiety. Whenever Colleen left, Sara exhibited destructive behaviors like chewing on furniture and even hurting herself from her restlessness.
The doggie’s anxiety was so bad that it came to the point that she had to leave her with somebody else or at doggie daycare whenever she went out. Colleen looked for a solution to help her doggie calm down her unease, seeking advice anywhere she can. She tried everything she could, from long walks to medication like Prozac and CBD oils, but none of them seemed to work even for a while. This was when her cousin suggested Colleen get a dummy and dress it up to look like her.
Dummy as proxy
Colleen ordered a dummy and dressed it up in her clothes. She even laid it next to her in bed so it would really catch her scent. From the first moment that she tried it out with Sara, the positive change in her demeanor was incredible! The presence of her owner’s scent nearby has helped calm down the anxious pooch so much so that her destructive behaviors have stopped completely. The dummy turned out to be a smart idea!
